Muse Fest HK 2023

This year for the Muse Fest HK 2023, the Conservation office will bring you a series of events from behind-the-scenes tour of our conservation laboratories to fun booth activities!

Programme 1 – ‘A Fiesta of Imagination’ ScM x Con Activity Booth @ ScM Piazza

Conservator's Ingenious Trick - Agar Gel

At the museum, a conservator is like a doctor for artworks and artefacts. When an artwork or artefact gets damaged, a conservator would perform thorough inspection, conduct tests to evaluate the condition, then prescribe a suitable treatment and operate on the object like a surgeon. The ingenious use of hydrogel has become the leading trend in various treatments for a range of artworks and artefacts. Come to our booth to learn of the latest innovative materials used in the conservation of cultural heritage, plus the chance to play and mess with agar gel!

Programme 2 – Family Workshop

Conserve It! Wonder Gel!

What do jelly pudding, shower gel and slime have in common? Yes, they are all variations of aqueous gels. Did you know gels can also be used to conserve artworks and artefacts? During the Muse Fest HK in November this year, Science Promotion Unit of Hong Kong Science Museum and the Conservation Office will collaborate for the first time to jointly organise the workshop "Conserve it! Wonder Gel!". Assistant Curators of the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Conservation Office will lead the participants to become junior conservators. We are now recruiting junior conservators to experiment and explore with us, tackle challenges faced by conservators and help to protect our cultural heritage! Let’s play and learn!
